Peter Hvidt + Orla Molgaard for France & Sons, Denmark

The Danish know exactly how to make furniture, and this gorgeous table designed by Peter Hvidt + Orla Molgaard for France & Son, is no exception.

Designed in the 1950′s, it is a classic of Danish elegance. Perfectly proportioned solid teak frame with a low- floating top and a slide-out extension on one end that is drink/spill-proof. These were also made in rosewood.

France & Son was one of Denmark’s most respected furniture makers in the Mid-20th Century.  The company started out under the name France & Daverkosen, then became France & Son when Mr. France’s son, Julian, joined the firm.  It eventually was sold in 1964 to Poul Cadovious, after which it was marketed under the name CADO. I am sure many of you are familiar with the iconic CADO teak wall unit systems produced in the 1960′s….that’s the company.

Getting back to the coffee table, these are pretty scarce and when they come up for sale, will run around $1,500 to $2,000. The rosewood versions, around $3,500.

And that’s the Mid-Century objet de la journee….
